SWEATING OUT STRESS & RUBBING AWAY ANXIETY

0

Stress and anxiety are among the two most common sources of work-weariness and complaint among urbanites, corporate executives, and other people who go each day to “fight” in the concrete jungles. Endless streams of tasks and unbeatable deadlines seem to push people near to the brink of resignation, if not from the job itself, but from the ability to meet the various expectations heaped upon them in the office. Aside from having the beat the early morning traffic and going off to work sans breakfast, the sheer competition in climbing up the corporate ladder have gotten into the minds of not a few “men in ties” and “women in heels.” No wonder, the 21st Century rat rate itself has spawned a new and thriving industries — the spa and the anti-anxiety medication businesses.

Having anxiety panic attacks will not exactly boost the corporate image of an up-and-coming, hardworking junior executive. Those who can hardly survive “in the kitchen” due to the intense office “heat” may opt to go to a doctor to get a prescription. But what they need to take every morning may not be the all-too-common multivitamin and minerals in capsule form. The visit to the doctor was prompted by the need to take specially made drugs to calm the nerves. The use of anti-anxiety drugs is now fast becoming a common procedure among busy executives who want to remain in control of their emotions as well as their careers.

Another hip and trendy way to beat corporate pressure is by going to a spa. For an hour or two, a hassled “business warrior” can go in to have spend time to break a sweat inside a sauna. Inside the wooden room with just enough heat to cause you to sweat out your body’s toxins, a tired executive can sit there for up to 45 minutes wearing nothing but a fresh towel. In between, sips of water needed to avoid dehydration, a spa enthusiast can take comfort that he is sweating away all the unhealthy elements of what he ate during that “power lunch” with the department head or the unwanted calories consumed during the company sales victory party. After perspiring away and feeling a bit lighter, the executive can then proceed to a discreet, aromatic room where his very own masseur waits with skillful hands. The all-too-willing subject of the massage can choose from a variety of techniques: Thai, Japanese, Swedish, Acupressure, Reflexology and even Shiamen-Style Foot Massage. All these massage styles offer soothing pleasures to the mind and body. Each therapuetic rub and stroke is made to specifically un-tie the “knots” and “bumps” from head to toe.

Indeed, stress and anxiety are looked at by career-driven individuals not only as mere emotional and physical distress. These are now the “enemies” and “obstacles” that could make or break a person’s climb to the top. The climb, or more appropriately, the race up the career highway has left many otherwise talented and skilled professionals lost, burned out, and out of the game.

Much like financial capital, equipment, technology and facilities — people are now also looked at as highly valuable factors of production. In fact, it is the troop of professionals and workers who actually make a business run, and not just the CEO or company president. For this reason, many corporations are now investing more and more in the health and well-being of their people. By pouring in more dollars to take care of their most valuable assets, companies are able to minimize employee burnout, sick leaves, and executive turnovers.

A major intervention or program that is present in almost every company is called stress management, technique or series of activities designed to help a person cope with the daily struggles and pressures of work. Specifically, stress management may involve one or all of the following scientifically-based procedures and techniques:

? Autogenic Therapy
? Cognitive Therapy
? Exercise
? Meditation
? Progressive Relaxation
? Use of Stress Balls

In fact, even engaging in sexual activities is considered a stress buster — a procedure that certainly beats going to a psychiatrist or stress therapist.

Regardless of the technique or method, beating stress will continue to be an additional survival skill that every executive or worker must learn in order to continue and succeed at work. It is not just a matter of “getting rid of the blues” or releasing tension and anger. Dealing with work-related anxieties is necessary to maintain one’s health as well to keep one competent and calm in facing the daily battles in the workplace.

The Many Faces of Anxiety

0

The condition known as anxiety can illicit a number of reactions from people. Many view it as a sign of weakness, treating the person experiencing it as a fear-controlled weakling, incapable of properly dealing with the world around him. Others view it as a character flaw that can be overcome, usually by having them continually face situations which cause them anxiety. Others still find that it is a mental problem, one that is easily confused with any number of similar, but not quite the same, psychological conditions. However, outside of the medical profession, most people don’t recognize that anxiety can be likened to an umbrella term, with a few other conditions falling under its jurisdiction.

Panic disorder, which the general public may or may not view as a more extreme form of anxiety, actually falls under the jurisdiction of the latter term’s definition. The two are characterized by the same general set of symptoms. These include extreme dread and fear, though no truly discernible, specific cause can be found. Both conditions have also been known to cause a number of physical side effects, usually the same ones associated with the body’s natural fear response mechanism. The primary difference between the two often lies solely on the intensity of the symptoms, with panic typically causing more noticeable problems than anxiety.

Interestingly, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) has also sometimes been categorized as being a sub-form of anxiety. OCD is a psychological conditions that makes a person put an undue level of focus on a given activity or thing, then compels them to perform actions related to said activity or thing. Jack Nicholson is known for having portrayed a character with OCD, with the focus being on cleanliness, in the film “As Good As It Gets.” The anxiety in this situation stems from instances where the patient fights the “compulsive” part of the disorder. Not doing what the mind believes should be done has been known to cause great discomfort to moments of fear and anxiety.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has also been cited as being linked to anxiety. This is particularly true of the PTSD patient who recalls traumatic experiences that are triggered by specific objects, sounds, or locations. This can include anything from being placed in or near the location where the trauma originally occurred. Exposure, or the mere threat of exposure can cause extreme anxiety and reactions in a person, with the effect noticeably becoming more intense as the prospect becomes more real. The anxiety can also reach the point where the patient will actively attempt to avoid being exposed to anything that might trigger a relapse of the traumatic memories.

Phobias are often considered to be specialized forms of the general anxiety problem. Unlike panic and the regular form of the condition, a person with a phobia associated feelings of fear and dread with a specific trigger. While PTSD may be associated with a phobia, the two do not always intermingle. In many cases, the fear is completely unfounded, but may be rooted deep in childhood experiences or specific situations.

Status Anxiety

0

The world as we know it is divided into two-rich and poor. Most of us would equate success on how people view us, how much material goods we have accumulated, or just how much people accept us. We also want to have influence and control over others, which is one of the strongest reasons why we try so hard to reach the top of the ladder, so to speak. But the pursuit of trying to be on “top” tends to backfire as we become more absorbed on achieving a high social or career status. This preoccupation with success, for some, leads down to the road of anxiety.

Status Anxiety, according author Alain de Botton, is all about the desire to “climb the social ladder” and the hunger for adulation and public approval. This quest for acclaim and material prosperity has been struggle for those the “have’s” and “have nots”. This competition for status and wealth has also elicited negative reactions and behavior such as snobbery, self-importance or conceit, flattery, and indifference.

This desire to be recognized, to “keep up with the Jones’” have given us too much worry; and little by little, the desire takes its toll. Before you know it, it affects the stability of your relationships. But status anxiety does not only emanate from pressures in the workplace. It can also take root inside our very own homes and family relationships. If left unattended, it leaves us frustrated and dissatisfied.

Indeed, society plays a big part since we now live in a very materialistic and status-conscious world. It is a society where money is power, where money is king, where money guarantees the ultimate status symbol of all. Our values are now easily being replaced with the craving for externalities and instant gratification, dictated upon by the fancy and confusing standards of 21st century living.

To stop ourselves from becoming part of the downward spiral, we should really stop the obsession over high social standing and material gain. Excessive materialism affects our emotional and psychological well-being. People should start to focus on what really matters in life — relationships, meaning, and purpose in life.

To do so otherwise would only result in more anxiety or panic attacks. When this condition persists, we suffer mentally, emotionally and physically. In fact, extreme anxiety can even become a debilitating situation, preventing people from pursuing normal lives. People in this harrowing situation must consult a doctor or a psychiatrist who may, in turn, prescribe anti anxiety medication, if found to be necessary.

There other avenues to consider by taking the road less traveled. You must change the way you think and take action. By transforming our value systems and priorities, we also slowly change our attitudes and reactions to the different situations we encounter each day. Instead of being trapped by the excessive desire to compete and win, people must place proper importance on the need to create a “win-win” solution — where everybody comes out as a winner. By taking it easy and learning how to accept ourselves as who we are, we would be able to have the right perspective in life, in work, and in love — which is crucial to have a balanced, healthy life.

There are a variety of ways and means to address stress and anxiety. For some, it can be as easy as changing a mindset or one’s way of looking at things. For others, medical intervention is a must. But the bottom line is that people must learn how to take care of themselves, as much as they need to show that they care for others. How we live, and not just how much we have, is what truly determines the richness of our lives. Our status in life should be measured by the nobility of our purpose and quality of our actions. Dwelling over “what would others think and say” is simply not worth having even just one sleepless night or bouts of insecurity.

Indeed, living in the 21st century has its own unique challenges and uncertainties which are enough to distress even the most talented and accomplished individual. But surely, all of us would do well the know and believe that there is more to life than just being in first place. More often, it is more important to know why we run, where we are, and where we are going in the race of life.

Dealing with Child Anxiety takes more than just therapy

0

Children often go out and play — activities that are normal for their physical, intellectual, and emotional development. They go to school, do homework, do some errands, and play again. They interact often with peers and are always on the go. In some cases, children get a chance to feel the surge of anxiety in and around their busy environment. Child anxiety often shows up in school events (like sport games or a science test), and even because of peer pressure. Although a little worry and a little sense of competition may boost a child’s performance in school, a positive fact since anxiety is often considered a negative response to challenging situations or problems.

But experiencing child anxiety in ill-suited situations can cause the kids to be extra stressful and distracted. It is a known fact that children are easily scared of anything. From spiders, frogs, monsters under their beds, dogs, or to the dark, they feel this rush of anxiety that makes them extra alert. Anxiety, in this case for children, is likewise general in nature-constant alertness. But it is essential that there exists a balance of anxiety that would not intervene with their daily normal functions.

Unfavorably for some, children also have different child anxiety disorders. Sometimes, children feel worried about something, making them think that they may fail in some way or another. This is an example of generalized anxiety disorder. Excessive worry for children can be treated by sharing them definite thoughts and giving them inspirational words, giving them an opportunity to learn how to “self talk” in a positive way. Other disorders also include panic disorder, often caused by panic attacks due to either psychological or physical harm. Another would be seperation anxiety disorder, that is common in young children who are extremely attached to either parents or siblings. Social and other specific phobias are also implications for such disorder, and is focused on fear of things or certain situations. A child with selective mutism often generates a feel of being alone. They usually do not converse with anyone or participate in any social interaction (in school or at home). Another would be having obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) as a child, since it can also affect their way of living, and this specific disorder is mostly carried out through adulthood.

Coping with anxiety can be easy and effective if the method is proven to be safe and known by medical institutions. The support of parents is also important in effective treatment of serious emotional and psychological conditions. Other methods to manage stress in children include cognitive- behavioral therapy such as role playing, relaxation training, healthy thinking, exposure to positive and rational thoughts, and also family therapy — which is acknowledged as one of the most effective ways for coping with anxiety.

Coping with anxiety in children takes time and effort from the therapists, doctors, and parents alike. Engaging them in proper social activities, helping them help themselves, and also praising them and constantly giving them gifts or goodies will give them more encouragement and support.

Social anxiety: the most misunderstood psychological problem

0

Social Anxiety is hardly a common term or word that you get to hear everyday.

But most people, at different times in their lives, have been plagued by shyness.

Remember the feeling of being introduced to a crowd of total strangers for the very first time? Or do you recall a childhood friend who was considered the laughing-stock in grade school? Any parent will tell you that it’s also normal for the little sister to be teased by older siblings or to be criticized by her playmates. Anyone who has taken center stage during an oral debate in school would also claim to have experienced a sudden breakout of sweat and uncontrolled shivering. Being the center of attention is always a desirable thing. For shy people, it can cause terrible “butterflies” and fainting spells.

Shy people tend to exhibit timidity, fear, and, in some occasions, even phobia. More than just being overly self-conscious or averse to meeting people, people with Social Anxiety think and feel that everyone seems to be watching their every move. They can’t relax and are constantly afraid that people are “judging” them in some way. Even their mobility is hampered by their excessive fear of being in public. Walking inside a mall or strolling in a park is a constant struggle.

People who have this type of anxiety disorder tend to isolate themselves, even if they are around familiar people. It is a crippling condition called Social Phobia or Social Anxiety Disorder

Social Anxiety is overwhelming fear of social situations where you may be “judged” negatively, and because of this, you become so self-conscious and afraid to be humiliated in front of others. Aside from fear and anxiety, people with phobias do everything they can to avoid their phobic stimulus.

Medical health professionals use the following signs in people to determine the presence of a social phobia:

• Unreasonable fear triggered by the presence especially “authoritative” figures;
• Fear of exposure to a crowd or a feared situation; and
• Intense anxiety from a situation that already interferes with a person’s normal routine or causes so much distress.

Ways to cope with Social Anxiety Disorder

Separating the real risks and dangers is one way. Taking control of the things you can change and accepting those which you cannot. Of course, with the help of family and friends, a person with social anxiety disorder can slowly confront fears. For serious cases, a professional therapist or doctor may be required.

Here are other ways to control anxiety: applying relaxation techniques, doing yoga, meditation, and exercise. Learning to be assertive is also one technique to overcome anxiety disorder. You should also focus on your good qualities and make an effort to make eye contact whenever you meet and greet people.

Anxiety is part of daily human experience. With proper help, and if necessary, appropriate medication, people can overcome fears and disallow phobias to rule over them. Motivating yourself and joining a support group is a tremendous help cope with the disorder. It might take some time, but if you take action now, the better for you and those people around you. Living life without fear will help you, your family, and friends to have more meaningful relationships and enjoy life to the fullest.

Stress, Anxiety and Insomnia Among Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

0

Tyler, a five-year old boy was nicknamed “Twister Tyler” after being diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) about four months ago. He is currently enrolled in a special education (SPED) school to accommodate his academic and social needs. During the initial pre-enrollment interview, Tyler’s mother said that her son used to study in a regular school but had to be transferred after the teachers complained about the boy’s disturbing behavior in the classroom. She said that the teachers found it hard to control Tyler every time he would roam around the classroom and grab his classmates’ belongings. She added that her son found it hard to pay attention during class and did not participate in group activities. At home, Tyler would leave his toys all over the house and climb over furniture and other high places. Even at a young age, Tyler’s mother already knew that her son was a handful, unlike other children his age. After careful consideration, she decided to seek a doctor’s opinion and found out about her son’s condition.

ADHD is still a relatively new condition that has yet to be understood by the public. While a number of professionals have guested in health-related television shows to explain ADHD, many are still clueless about the nature, symptoms, and possible treatments for this condition. Those who are uninformed about the true nature of ADHD often unknowingly label children with this condition as being simply “hyperactive.” Others are even considered as “abnormal children.”

Parents who suspect that their children might be positive for ADHD should strongly consider having them examined by a specialist. Diagnosis of ADHD can only be made by doctors who have thorough knowledge of this condition. These parameters are usually used by doctors to determine if a child is ADHD-positive:

* A child exhibits behaviors common among those with ADHD;
* A child exhibits disturbing or hyperactive behavior that is uncommon in other children of the same age; and
* A child exhibits disturbing or hyperactive behavior for more that six months.

Parents must exert efforts to understand ADHD and should avoid labeling a child without proper evaluation by a doctor. Labeling will just create a stigma on children which will cause a wrong concept of themselves. It is sometimes difficult to properly diagnose children as having ADHD since a lot of other conditions also exhibit the same symptoms. Symptoms of ADHD include inability or difficulty paying attention and sustaining attention, difficulty remaining seated and constantly fidgeting, and problems with interrupting and waiting for turns. These symptoms are also exhibited by children who suffer from stress and depression and those with behavioral problems. It is therefore necessary to exhaust all possible information about the child and his behaviors through evaluations and interviews before making a valid diagnosis.

A lot of parents, mostly those who have children with ADHD, often wonder how their kids acquired the condition. Based on recent studies done by Dr. Joseph Beiderman, Dr. Dennis Cantwell and Dr. Florence Levy, heredity plays a major role in developing ADHD. Other studies also show that infant exposure to toxic substances such as nicotine and alcohol and injury to the brain, especially the frontal lobe, from trauma or tumors can also lead to kids having ADHD.

Hyperactivity is one of the most noticeable characteristics of children with ADHD. It is said that this behavior results from a problem in an executive function of their brain. This executive function is identified as response or behavior inhibition. Because of their difficulty in inhibition, their sleep behaviors are affected. Moreover, children with ADHD are sometimes prescribed medications containing stimulants which also prevent them from being able to sleep. A lot of these kids with this condition, thus, are susceptible to having insomnia.

Like most people who suffer from insomnia, children with sleeping disorders also exhibit anxiety as a result of their lack of rest. Their mood and performance in school are most affected by this problem. When a child with ADHD is suspected to be having problems with sleeping, it is best to consult a doctor immediately. The doctor may prescribe medications to address this problem and determine what other management can be provided. It will also be helpful to teach the child relaxation techniques and proper sleeping habits such as avoiding rigorous activities before sleep.

The importance of ADHD awareness and its accompanying complications should be emphasized not only to those afflicted with the condition but to parents and other individuals concerned. Awareness leads to the proper management of the condition and appropriate response to the situation. Forcing a child with ADHD to sit quietly for hours in class, expecting them to perform or behave like most children their age and reprimanding them constantly because of their peculiarities will only lead to a feeling of stress and anxiety. With all the compounding problems that children with ADHD already suffer, the least thing people could do to help is to avoid adding up unnecessary and inappropriate demands. Through proper treatment and appropriate management, sleeping problems, anxiety and stress that result from or relate to ADHD can be lessened or prevented.

Loneliness makes people unhappy and often leads to serious cases of Anxiety

0

It was the biggest story to break in 2007. The gripping violence glued thousands on their t.v. screens. Cold and calculated, a South Korean student went on a rampage, killing 30 more people till he also died with his own weapon.atching the news cuts through the heart and sent shivers down the spine of an entire nation that witnessed the tragedy at Virginia Tech, and years earlier, the gruesome shootings at Columbine.

A profile of the gunman based from the numerous interviews with his relatives, professors and fellow students indicates that the gunmen looks like suffering from severe emotional distress, having suicidal thoughts, projects depressed moods and socially isolated. Based on recent studies, a person who is constantly isolated is extremely lonely.

Loneliness is the absence of having friends, but having many friends may not guarantee happiness, however, it plays an important role in a person’s mental health according to some psychologist. Having good social relationships makes a person more extroverted and less neurotic. The lack of social networks is perhaps, one reason why most people have social phobia.

Social Anxiety Disorder is the intense and persistent fear of being the company of strangers, fear of scrutiny by others in a social situation, This is often left undiagnosed. A person afflicted with this disorder always anticipates embarrassment and humiliation. Even simple things like public speaking, eating and drinking in public places can cause great anxiety.

The intense anxiety may lead to avoidance behavior. It gives a person so much discomfort. Social Anxiety Disorder is different from shyness. A shy person may feel very uneasy around others but might not experience anxiety. Anxiety usually comes during or before a feared situation. A feared situation can cause a person so much distress and it might interfere with school, work or any social event.

For instance, a child may have a poor school performance due to classroom activities that require constant interaction with the his/her classmates. Social anxiety is a barrier that prevents people from having meaningful relationships. There is a saying that “no man is an island,” yet people’s exaggerated fears have hampered their own social development.

To control anxiety attacks, you must be clinically diagnosed by a psychologist or psychiatrist. Many cases of social anxiety disorders closely resemble Avoidance Personality Disorder. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent the negative effects of these disorders. Treatment of this anxiety can undertaken with the use of different medications such as benzondiazepines, beta-blockers and antidepressants.

Aside from seeking treatment, one of the best ways to combat social phobia and loneliness is by joining a support group. Support groups are a big help where people with sever anxieties can learn different techniques to cope with their disorder. But a combination of medication and therapy can go a long, long way. Therapy may be focused on the management of anger and improvement of self-esteem and social skills. In combination with therapy, anti-anxiety medication may help those suffering from social disorders to lead more normal lives.

Some Tips On Overcoming Anxiety

0

In the United States alone, millions of people are recorded to have been suffering from anxiety disorders every year. This only proves that anxiety is one of the most common psychological illnesses today; actually even more prevalent than depression.

Anxiety disorders come in a number of forms. These include fear, phobia, extreme nervousness, and pathological anxieties. What is really alarming with anxiety disorders is that these oftentimes attack or trigger without any warning at all. Although some cases of anxiety conditions are only short term, there are some cases that can go on for years, especially among individuals who refuse to seek treatments for their conditions.

Unlike what some people think, overcoming anxiety is not that difficult or complicated. With the proper diagnosis and treatments, one can totally free himself from the hassles and complications of having an extreme case of anxiety.

Apart from the basic therapies regularly recommended by doctors to patients suffering from anxiety, the following are some effective and simple treatments that help reduce or manage anxiety:

1. Make sure to get enough sleep.

3. Munch on healthy meals and snacks.

A healthy daily diet keeps a person from experiencing too much stress and anxiety. Hence, doctors always advice patients to include vegetables and fruits in their daily diet.

4. Avoiding drugs and alcohol.

There are some people who think that alcohol and drugs can take away all their worries and problems. In fact, these only worsen a person’s anxiety condition. Instead of freeing one from anxiety, too much alcohol and medication consumption will most likely lead to addiction.

5. Seek emotional support from friends and family members.

Sometimes, the only thing that can free a person from too much anxiety is to be around the people who can give strong emotional and spiritual support. If a person has a strong social support system, he is less likely to develop anxiety disorder and stress.

6. Try meditating.

Many studies claim that meditation is a great way of reliving one’s stress and anxieties. With the treatment’s ability to reduce anxiety, specialists recommend patients to enroll or join in meditation classes.

7. Try practicing relaxation techniques.

Another good technique on overcoming anxiety is to practice relaxation routines. One of the most commonly practiced relaxation routines are visualization and breathing. These practices really help in reducing and even eliminating the feeling of anxiety.
